ZEPHYR LUMOS was in collision with the bulk carrier 'Galapagos'
Casualty
The 'Zephyr Lumos', en route from Singapore to Suez, was in collision with the bulk carrier 'Galapagos' (IMO: 9473169) on July 10, 2021 in the Malacca Strait off Melaka, halfway between Singapore and Port Dickson, 14.1 nautical miles southwest of the Sungai Muar estuary.
Both ships were proceeding in western direction when the 'Galapaos', which was en route from Gladstone to Visakhapatnam, experienced a steering system failure, forcing it to move to the right as 'Zephyr Lumos' was overtaking it.
This caused the 'Galapagos' to got before the bow of the other ship which hit its starboard side, causing heavy damages. The ships parted again after the collision and both dropped anchor near the collision site.
The Southern Region Marine Department and the Johor Department of
Environment was informed of the incident at 12.30 a.m. As of July 11, the
'Zephyr Lumos' was moored in pos. 01° 59.38' N 102° 16.92' E.
The vessels were carrying a crew of 24 and 26 respectively and have been
detained to assist in the investigation conducted by the Marine Department of
Malaysia and the Department of Environment.
