Malaysia: MMEA arrests oil tanker from South Korea over maritime violation
11 Aug 2021
The Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Tuesday (10 August) said it has arrested an oil tanker from South Korea on Monday afternoon in East Johor waters.
Johor State Maritime Director, First Admiral Nurul Hizam bin Zakaria said MMEA maritime assets arrested the vessel approximately 5.15 pm at 15 eastern nautical miles off Tanjung Siang, Johor during an enforcement patrol.
Initial inspections found the vessel had been waiting for moving orders from the shipping company since last Friday.
The Captain had not informed Malaysian authorities of the vessel’s arrival and failed to present any documents indicating permission to anchor in Malaysia’s waters.
As such, the vessel was arrested under Section 491B (l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 that allocates a fine of not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding two years or both.
Captain and Chief Engineer has also been brought to Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone office to assist in further investigations.
